Part Time Clown

We often see clowns performing in children’s parties, family day festivals, shopping malls, carnival, sales and marketing campaigns and even stage shows.

They bring laughter to us and most of our family members enjoy the performances very much.

A clown usually performs some magic shows, dramas with funny characters, balloon-twisting for children and so on.

An experienced and popular clown make about RM600.00 to RM800.00 per stage show session (1 hour to 1.5 hours). Those who perform at theme parks, street parties, road shows and carnivals usually charge about RM250.00 per hour. Clowns also perform at children’s house parties and the charges are about RM400.00 per hour.

What is the market potential for a Part- Time Clown?

Clown performance is a professional job and the income is very lucrative. Imagine if you perform 2 events per week at the charges of RM200.00 per show. Your potential income is about RM200 x 4 = RM800.00 per month.

According to one of Malaysia’s leading clown performers and instructors, there are about 150 clowns in Malaysia and we have a population of 27 million. The market is huge and worth to explore. Children’s birthday parties are very common today and a lot of parents do not mind spending money as long as their children are happy.

How do you market yourself? At the beginning, you have to put in some effort to market yourself; you may perform at parks, children’s playgrounds and at the same time distributing some flyers about your service; you may perform in hospitals or orphanage homes to entertain the children; perform at friends’ and relatives’ children’s birthday parties.

During those performances, you will have the opportunity to distribute some name cards or flyers to introduce your service.

How do I become a Part- Time Clown?

To become a clown, you must first go through proper training to understand the character of a clown, performances such as funny dramas and magic shows, balloon twisting techniques, make up and so on. A proper 16- hour clown training by Malaysia’s leading clown instructor, Uncle Button cost about RM600.00

Once you complete the training, you need to purchase some costumes such as oversized boots, a big red nose, wigs, makeup set etc. The above items’ cost range from RM20.00 to RM350.00.

My opinion

If you like entertaining people, especially children, I strongly suggest you to take up this skill. You need about RM600.00 for the course fees and about RM1,400.00 to buy some costumes. Thus, an investment of RM2,000.00, and I am sure if you put in your effort, you will recover your investment in less than 3 months.

Imagine yourself, a clown, performing in front of a group of lovely children, enjoying the cheers, the laughter and the warm environment. Thinking of this, I might consider becoming a clown as well.

If you are having some financial problems, go to a bank which offers personal loans. As long as you have a stable income over the last 6 months, I do not see any problem getting a small amount of financial assistance.
